Sampling of river sediments in the Danube River Basin

Within the scope of the iNNO SED project work program, on Aug 7-8th the team from the Geological Institute at the Bulgarian Academy of Science carried out sediment sampling in the Danube River basin (rivers Ogosta, Iskar, Yantra, and Danube near Vetren and near Lake Srebarna). The team also visited DS6 site - Danube River near Silistra, where they held a field meeting with colleagues from IBER-BAS (an associated partner of iNNO SED) who were conducting sampling for Joint Danube Survey 5 (JDS 5, ICPDR). Discussions focused on the currently applied methods of biota sampling in bottom sediments and on the opportunities for collaboration in the development and testing of a complex methodology for simultaneous sampling of biota, quality and quantity of sediments in DS6. Additionally, with representatives from the Regional Inspectorate for Environment and Water in Ruse at Srebarna the impact of sediment quantity and quality on the Srebarna Reserve was discussed.
