Environmental Geotechnics

The Environmental Geotechnics Department was established in 2004. It is a successor of the originated in the 70`s Loess Complex Investigation Department of the Institute of Water Problems and the Soil Improvement Department of the Laboratory of Geotechnics.

The complete scientific staff includes one corresponding member, one professor, five associate professors, one doctor of sciences, and eight doctors. The Department members are involved in the postgraduate (master) programs of the Sofia University “St. Kliment Ohridski” and the University of Mining and Geology “St. Ivan Rilski”. The Department is an initiator of Geotechnics Research Base (in Rousse Town) of the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences, located in Rousse Town. The Department research and scientific directions are in the following fields: methods of soil and ground improvement, site selection and site investigation studies for the needs of hazardous and industrial facilities (nuclear power plants, radioactive waste repositories, factories, TV towers); new survey methods; assessment of terrains with occurring geohazard processes. During the years, the Department researchers have established collaboration with scientists from Italy, Belgium, Romania, Russia, the United Kingdom, Japan, etc. They are also former or active members of editorial boards of national or foreign magazines. The Department has led tens high-impact projects financed by the government, state and private companies.The heads of the present format of the Department were Prof. Dr.Sci. Dimcho Evstatiev and Assoc. Prof. Dr. Krastyo Todorov. The current leader is Prof. Doncho Karastanev.
