Research on Hazardous Geological Processes
In the vicinity of the Zografou Monastery, Mount Athos, Greece
Scientists from the Geological Institute - Prof. Dr. Nikolai Dobrev and Assoc. Prof. Dr. Miroslav Krastanov have performed an expert study of hazardous geological processes affecting the area at Zografou Monastery, Mount Athos, Greece. Nine sections around the monastery and the road to the harbor have been surveyed. The main hazardous phenomena are presented by rockfalls and landslides. Rock and earth samples have been taken to determine the physical and mechanical properties. Instructions have been given to prevent the activation of such phenomena during upcoming road reconstruction works. This research has been supported by the National Geoinformation Center Project.
