On September 30, 2026 (Wednesday) from 12 to 1 p.m. in Room 203 of the Geological Institute at the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences, a seminar will be held on the topic: "The impact of volcanic super-eruptions on marine plankton: examples from the Eocene–Oligocene transition on the island of Limnos, Greece" Lecturer: Prof. Kristalina Stoykova, D.Sc.
Although numerous studies have examined the climatic consequences of modern large-scale volcanic eruptions, the associated responses of marine nanoplankton have been poorly investigated. This gap in our knowledge is even more pronounced in the geological record. The impact of volcanic eruptions on the productivity of marine calcareous nanoplankton remains particularly poorly understood in relation to semi-enclosed basins, such as parts of the Tethys and Paratethys in Europe during the Early Oligocene. To assess this impact, we employed a quantitative analysis of calcareous nanoplankton assemblages associated with two early Oligocene eruptions in the Rhodopes, the products of which are exposed on the island of Limnos (Greece). The data were compared with published contemporaneous data from the Central and Eastern Paratethys.
