What strategic raw materials does Bulgaria have?
Raw materials have been the foundation of human civilisation from ancient times to the present day. The availability, extraction and processing of raw materials necessary for the economy, industrial and social development provide a strategic advantage to the country that exploits them. The development of modern technologies and their widespread integration into our lives require a wide range of relatively rare raw materials, which are extracted and processed in only a small number of countries. The need for these resources, combined with a lack of domestic extraction and processing capacity, as well as supply insecurity, necessitates their classification by the European Union as critical and strategic raw materials (CSRMs). At present, 49 chemical elements and a small number of minerals have been identified as such; after grouping elements with similar properties, this number is reduced to 34 raw materials.
