Moment deformations in young sediments – geological indicators of paleoseismological events

Partners
Royal Observatory of Belgium
Geological Institute, Bulgarian Academy of Sciences

Duration 2000–2002

Part of this work has been supported by The European Center for Geodynamics and Seismology in the frame of the project "Paleoseismological investigations of active fault segments on the territory of Bulgaria. Test area: Chirpan-Plovdiv region"

North of Cherna gora village
The first trench

The scientists from Geological Institute of Bulgarian Academy of Sciences and Royal Observatory of Belgium perform the joint researches on the territory of Bulgaria. The project aims to provide and analyse the first quantitative paleoseismological data for some active recently faults in Trace depression, South Bulgaria. The data are based on geomorphologic and geophysical studies, trenching, and studies on the speleothems. The final result is evaluation of the recurrence of strong earthquakes.

After analysing the historical seismisity we choose the region of the town of Chirpan and the village of Popovitsa, where two strong events happened in 1928. The damages, ruptures and surface changes have been carefully described and published by scientists just after the earthquakes.
