About us Palaeontology, Stratigraphy and Sedimentology are main branches in the field of the geological science, whereas combined they are basic for most of the geological researches and discoveries. The Department of Palaeontology and Stratigraphy in the Geological Institute at the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences is founded in 1962 under the guidance of Prof. Hristo Spassov as one of the initial sections of the institution. Working throughout the years at times as one Department at others as two separate Departments in 2004 the Department of Palaeontology and Stratigraphy merges with the Department of Sedimentology. Nowadays head of the united Department of Palaeontology, Stratigraphy and Sedimentology is Professor Iliana Boncheva, PhD. The members of the staff include: 2 Professors, 6 Senior Research Associate, 4 Research Associate, 1 PhD Students,and 1 Technicians. To the Department belong:
