Palaeontology, stratigraphy and sedimentology are fundamental fields of geology and a basis for the practical chronology of events and processes in the geological history of the Earth. Stratigraphic and sedimentological surveys are a major information product that serves not only fundamental research but primarily serves a large number of applied activities based on geological maps and related to the assessment of the potential of individual areas as sources of mineral raw materials and groundwater; preparation of projects for the construction of residential, industrial, communication and infrastructure facilities; assessment of the geo-ecological situation and pollution of the environment; predicting geological disasters; improving the living environment; documenting and storing the geological heritage; regional cooperation in the development of cross-border projects, etc. Essential applications are found in the assessment of oil-gas prospects and the correlation of drilling cuts in specific studies on conventional and unconventional energy resources in the territory and the adjacent aquatic environment of the Republic of Bulgaria.
The Department of Palaeontology, Stratigraphy and Sedimentology has emerged as the largest center in Bulgaria for fundamental and applied scientific studies in stratigraphy, consultancy and expert activity, application of scientific results and preparation of highly qualified specialists in the field of paleontology and stratigraphy.
Maintaining high professionalism and competence of the scientific staff is a prerequisite for the team of specialists in the department to be a key unit in the field of "Palaeontology, stratigraphy and sedimentology" and to be considered a basic research unit in Bulgaria, which provides continuity and replenishment with young cadres of the scientific potential in the scientific specialty "Palaeontology and stratigraphy".
